1844, solicitor's office, Tarporley. 1849, entered as lab asst in chemical works of Messrs Tennants, Ardwick, manufacturing chemists (method for estimation of chromium in chrome ore). 1865, devised apparatus for rapid determination of sulphur dioxide in chamber gases. Member of M'cr Chemical Society (1883). 1847 (?) discovered the shale oil process. Manager of chemical works in Ardwick Bridge, later Clayton. Vice-Chairman of M'cr section of Soc of Chemical Industry.
