Read papers to M'cr Geological Soc ( Geological Soc of London). Pres addresses to British Assocn & ICE. Reports on dock and harbour works at Bristol (1860); Holyhead (1873), Suez Canal (1863); on narrow gauge for India (1870) , on Thames Valley (1878)and the purification of the Clyde (1876).

1838 Engineer & general manager of M'cr and Bolton railway. Discovered fossil trees at Clifton. 1839 a founding member of the M'cr Inst for the Illustration & Encouragement of Practical Science. Later became the Royal Victoria Gallery. 1845 engineer to M'cr and Leeds railway; 1850 consulting engineer in London. 1873 knighted. 1875 President of British Assocn. 1888 retired from business. Served on Govt committees. member of M'cr Geological Soc (Council 1840 -1). President of ICE (1862 & 1863). Works inc Charing Cross railway, bridges over the Thames, Severn tunnel (1887) and completion of Clifton Suspension Bridge (with W H Barlow)
